MONROE - The Monroe softball team earned the No. 1 seed in the WIAA Division 2 regional tournament, as revealed in brackets released Thursday by the WIAA.
Monroe (16-2, 8-0 Badger South) is ranked third in Division 2 and received the top seed ahead of River Valley (15-0), which is ranked fifth. The Cheesemakers, the state runner-up last year, have made state runs four times since 2008.
With the top seed, Monroe receives a first-round bye and will play the winner of fourth-seeded Platteville and fifth-seeded Mount Horeb Tuesday, May 21 at Twining Park. The Cheesemakers and River Valley could meet in the regional championship for the fourth time in the last five years.
"It's been a few years since we have been the No. 1 seed," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said. "We are happy to be the No. 1 seed. We thought we were the best team, but we weren't sure since River Valley is undefeated and has some good wins too. It's set up for us to make a run."
Monroe plays a doubleheader at Milton today. The Cheesemakers have to win three of their final four conference games to win the Badger South outright.
"We want to win a conference championship and then we will turn our attention to the tournament," Buvid said. "We still have work to do."
The Cheesemakers could play their first three games at Twining Park since the sectional semifinal is in Monroe this year.
In Division 3, Brodhead received a No. 1 seed, and will play the winner of fourth-seeded Belleville and fifth-seeded Darlington Tuesday, May 21. Seven area teams will be in action in the first round of regionals. Their games, slated for Thursday, May 16, are as follows:
Division 3
No. 5 Darlington at Belleville
No. 6 New Glarus at No. 3 Cuba City
Division 4
No. 5 Juda-Albany at No. 4 Argyle
No. 6 Pecatonica at No. 3 Williams Bay
No. 7 Black Hawk at No. 2 Monticello
