MONROE - The Monroe High School boys basketball team learned its opponent for its opening game in the WIAA basketball tournament.

Monroe (9-12) received an eighth seed and will host ninth-seeded Oregon (10-11) in a WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinal game at 7 p.m. Feb. 28. The Cheesemakers and Panthers split two Badger South Conference games this season. The Panthers defeated the Cheesemakers 45-38 Jan. 27 and Monroe beat visiting Oregon 54-43 Feb. 2.

"I was really surprised," Monroe coach Brian Bassett said of getting the eighth seed. "We thought we would get the nine or 10 based on how we have been playing lately. At least one coach had us at seven. Some of the coaches showed a lot of respect for Monroe. We just have to get back together and make a run late."

If Monroe wins, the Cheesemakers would play top-seeded Waunakee in a regional semifinal game March 3.

The WIAA released the seeds and brackets Sunday for the boys tournament.

The other area regional games are as follows:

Brodhead received a 13th seed and will play at fourth-seeded Madison Edgewood.
