MADISON - The Monroe boys soccer team saw its season come to a close Thursday afternoon with a 5-0 loss to Madison Edgewood.
"It was a game our guys were excited about," Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said.
Edgewood scored three goals in the first half and two more in the second. Monroe goalkeeper Deven Schulte had 11 saves, and the Cheesemakers were outshot 16-4.
"With our (low) numbers, and we had a late game in the season where we got one of our better players hurt, it really put us in a bind," Vasquez said of his roster size. "Daniel Lapp is an outside player and plays 90 minutes. With him out, we had two and three guys trying to fill that gap."
Low numbers of players plagued the team all season, especially when injuries started affecting more than just a player or two.
"The bus ride home tonight (Thursday), the kids were happy. I was proud of them. They went through so many obstacles this year - injuries, numbers and one of the toughest schedules we've ever had - and yet our guys kept competing," Vasquez said.
Monroe finished the season 6-11-2 overall, but with just one senior graduating, Vasquez likes his team's prospects for next year.
"Most teams we play are starting 10 or 11 seniors, and we had only one on our roster. We're excited with our sophomores, juniors and everyone coming back," Vasquez said.
