REEDSBURG - Monroe's boys basketball team continues to win in 2009.

On Saturday night, the Cheesemakers topped Reedsburg (5-9, 3-5 Badger North) in a makeup game from Dec. 19, 54-43.

"I was pretty happy with the effort," head coach Pat Murphy said. "We shot just 33 percent in the game, so that has to get better. But our defense did a good job all night."

Monroe took a 15-13 lead after the first quarter, but the Beavers tied it up by halftime.

"Reedsburg plays a tough defense in that they play a switching man-to-man style," Murphy said.

In the second half, the Cheesemakers pulled ahead, led by senior guard Mitch Tordoff, who finished the game with 23 points.

Murphy said Tordoff has really taken his senior leadership to the next level over the course of the season.

"He's finding his teammates and recognizes what the defense is giving him. And he's not afraid to take the tough shot," Murphy said.

Monroe took a 37-32 lead after the third quarter, and hit its free throws down the stretch. The Cheesemakers finished 21-for-26 from the free throw line.

"This game kind of reminded me of the Rock Island Alleman game," Murphy said. "Both teams couldn't really find a way to put the ball in the hoop, and the game in itself was just kind of a grind."

Murphy was very pleased with his defense. He put sophomore Michael Barrett on Reedsburg's Tyler Mazur and Mitch McArdle on Jordan VanCleave. The two held the Beavers' top scoring duo to just 10 points - 18 fewer than their season average. Mazur had been averaging 14.8 points per game, and VanCleave 13.2.

Jake Grinnell scored 11 points for Monroe, with Barrett and Bryan Tordoff each finishing with seven.

Monroe (9-3, 7-0 Badger South) plays three more games this week as the season winds down. Tuesday night the Cheesemakers travel to Oregon (3-9, 2-4), then host DeForest (4-9, 1-6) on Friday and Freeport on Saturday.

"These next couple of weeks are going to be big. Oregon will be looking for payback. And with three games this week, we are going to have some tight practices and our guys will have to learn the scouting reports pretty quick," Murphy said.
