WAUNAKEE - The Monroe boys track team is heating up for the Southern Badger Conference dual meet season.

The Cheesemakers won a triangular meet at Waunakee on Thursday. The Cheesemakers won the triangular meet against Waunakee and Oregon after posting 82 points.

Monroe senior Brett DeNure won both the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4 minutes, 30.2 seconds and the 3,200 (10:25.8).

"Brett held off a strong surge from a Waunakee runner in the mile and outkicked him down the stretch for the win," Monroe coach Dave Hirsbrunner said.

The Cheesemakers won just seven of the 18 events, but still had enough top performances to win the meet. The Cheesemakers were missing several athletes who were at the FFA banquet in Monroe.

"Our depth really showed through tonight," Hirsbrunner said. "The rest of the guys stepped up for those who were missing. We are happy to escape with a big win."

The Cheesemakers' 3,200 relay team of Cody Plenge, Gavin Wels, Joe Pecora and Dylan Starck finished first with a time of 8:52.8.

Hirsbrunner said every relay ran their fastest time of the season.

Monroe sophomore Caleb Ahrens won the 110 hurdles in 17 seconds. The Cheesemakers had three athletes who won events in the field including Nick Walker in the shot put (45-feet-10 inches), Lucas Leu in the discus (141-5) and Jeff Hill in the pole vault (13-6).

The Monroe girls track team received a big performance from its 3,200 relay team.

The Cheesemakers' 3,200 relay team of Stephanie Wyss, Tessa Frutiger, Molly Wyss and Tess Seichter finished first with a time of 10:27.1.

"I was surprised with how well our relays ran, especially the 4x800 relay which set one of the fastest times in Division 2 so far," Monroe girls track coach Curt Miller said. "Today was a great day to try some kids in a few new events and we found out a lot about our team."

Meaghan Tomasiewicz won the pole vault (9-9) and Jess Leu took first in the shot put (31-6).

"Jess Leu had a great night in the throws, winning the shot and taking second in the disc," Miller said. "She's only a sophomore and will get better from here."
