RIVER VALLEY - Monroe upset River Valley in the second round of the WIAA Division 2 softball playoffs with an 8-3 win Tuesday.
Meghan Roberts struck out five hitters and allowed just two walks and four hits to pick up the win on the mound.
River Valley scored two runs in the bottom of the first, but Monroe chipped away. The Cheesemakers scored one in the second, one in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie the game at 3-3. The Cheesemakers then got three runs in the sixth and added two more for insurance in the seventh.
The Cheese had seven extra base hits, including a pair of doubles and a triple by Kelsey Erickson, who finished 4-for-4 in the game. Maggie Schuttler, Coree Lee, Kristin McArdle and Paisley Bennett each had a triple for Monroe.
"Kelsey got us going with two big ones," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said. "Everyone seemed to pick it up from there and got it done."
Kristin McArdle had a pair of hits, while the Cheesemakers pounded out 12 hits in all and had no errors on defense.
"We hit the ball a ton," Buvid said. "We had some timely two-out hits and did some damage against a quality pitcher."
Monroe (16-9) will play at No. 1 seed Prairie du Chien for the regional final at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
