Cheesemakers advance to state in 11 events

BOSCOBEL - The Monroe boys track team will send four individuals in five events and two relay teams to state.

Monroe finished third as a team at the WIAA Division 2 Boscobel sectional Thursday. The Cheesemakers were just two points behind second-place Platteville (63) and behind sectional champion La Crosse Aquinas (73).

The Cheesemakers' 1,600-meter relay team of Skyler Stingley, Ethan Moehn, Alex Barenklau and Matt Bush won a sectional championship with a time of 3 minutes, 26.73 seconds.

"Our field was very tough," Monroe coach Curt Miller said. For them to win it was very impressive."

The same quartet combined to finish second in the 3,200 relay with a time of 7:58.37. Sugar River's 3,200 relay team including Josh Stern, Ryan McCoy, Wesley Morgan and Dennis Haak. They won a sectional title in the 3,200 relay with a time of 7:58.07.

"We ran extremely fast considering our best runner wasn't in there yet," Miller said of Dylan Starck. "We had a ton of confidence in those guys. They just had an unbelievable race. Dylan will be there at state for sure."

Starck focused on his individual events at the sectional and he took fourth in the 800 (1:58.50) to qualify for state. Sugar River's Dennis Haak won a sectional title in the 800 (1:58.12).

Monroe's Nick Walker finished third in both the shot put (49 feet, 6 inches) and discus (149-6) to qualify for state in both events.

"I'm really happy for Nick," Miller said. "He's one of those kids who has worked super hard to get where he is at as a senior."

Monroe's Jeffrey Hill won a sectional title in the pole vault (13-9 inches) and Michael Barrett took second in the high jump (6-6). Monroe's Caleb Ahrens was fifth in the 110 hurdles and missed qualifying for state by one hundredth of a second

McCoy took fourth in the 1,600 (4:21.30) and he just missed qualifying for state in the 3,200 by about five seconds.

Sugar River freshman Garrison Woods took third in the triple jump (42-0) and fourth in the long jump (20-0). Brodhead-Juda's Michael Peterson also qualified for state by taking fourth in the triple jump (41-10). Peterson edged teammate Joey Jordan by 3 1/2 inches for the final state berth.

In the girls competition, Monroe's Jaclyn Ditter qualified for state in the 100 and 300 hurdles. The Cheesemakers also will send the 400 and 800 relay teams to state.

Ditter took third in the 100 hurdles (:15.84) and third in the 300 hurdles (:46.95).

"She hit one of the hurdles, but she is strong enough to get to state," Miller said of Ditter in the 100 hurdles. "She is a tough runner. She ran her best race in the 300 hurdles."

The Cheesemakers' 400 relay team including Maria Eberle, Lauren Werth, Brenna Bazley and Ditter won a sectional championship in the event, with a time of 50.62 seconds. In the 800 relay, Eberle, Rachel Rogerson, Bazley and Werth took fourth (1:48.91) right behind Sugar River which finished third (1:47.57). Monroe took 11th as a team with 30 points. La Crosse Aquinas was the sectional champion, outdistancing runner-up McFarland 68-55.

Brodhead-Juda's Shannon Klein took second in the 400 (:58.75) and third in the 200 (:26.50) and helped lead the Cardinals to a seventh place finish as a team. The Cardinals had two state qualifiers in the discus. Heather Clankie was a sectional champion in the discus for the Cardinals (128-9) and Alicia Condon was second (115-6). Sugar River's Ashley Brusveen took third in the high jump (5-2). Sugar River's Victoria Ortgiesen missed qualifying for state in the 300 hurdles by two hundredths of a second.
