MONROE - Both the Monroe boys and girls track teams came out on top in their dual with Badger South rival Madison Edgewood Wednesday night.

Despite resting some of their top athletes, the Cheesemaker boys won 11 of 18 events on their way to a 96-45 win.

"In a dual meet ... when they're not really scored for a purpose, we can try a different things," Curt Miller said. "With guys like Ethan (Moehn), Jake Hirsbrunner and Alex Barenklau (not leading the way) ... to score that many points is a good show of the depth we have on the track."

Monroe didn't go with their typical 4x800 relay team, but Eric Bush, Jack Schluesche, Thang Lu, and Derek Christiansen still brought home first place in the event. The Cheesemakers also took first in the 4x200 and 4x100 relays. Junior Dakota Phillips won the 100-meter race in 11.53 seconds. Ethan Moehn won the 400 in 51.07 seconds. Freshman Tyler Sobacki won the 300 intermediate hurdles in 45.18. AJ Cifuentes won the 800 in 2 minutes, 3.49 seconds, and Seth Calaway won the 200 in 24.20 seconds. Junior Noah Tostrud won the 1,600-meter race in 4 minutes, 46.26 seconds. The Cheesemakers also picked up two wins in field events. Cody Faust won the high jump with a jump of 5'6" and Grant Keith won the pole vault with a personal best 12'. Miller said he was particularly pleased with the performance of Tostrud and Phillips.

"That was really (Tostrud's) first time doing a competitive mile outside of a gym class," Curt Miller said. "Dakota Phillips had a really nice day. Those two guys really did a nice job today, and they're going to be pretty key when we come down the stretch (of the season)."

Miller also said that, as the season progresses, the Cheesemakers will be looking to see improvement from their field events.

"We've got some work to do in some of our field events," he said, "and those kids know that. We haven't jumped some of our better jumpers yet. I was pretty happy with Grant Keith in the pole vault."

Miller will split the team on Friday, sending the upper-level athletes to the 12-team Fort Atkinson invitational and the others to a varsity meet in Wisconsin Heights. He sees it as a good opportunity to give his athletes the varsity competition they may have missed out on with the cancellation of larger meets earlier this spring.

"I feel bad for our kids having to miss out on the Glendenning Invite ... so this is our chance," Curt Miller said. "In our conference, the top three teams should be at the Fort Atkinson Invite. It will be kind of fun to square off a little bit in the invitation setting."

On the girls side, the Cheesemakers won 9 of the 18 events, but managed to pick up enough points to get a 77-68 win.

The Cheesemaker girls won both the 4x100 and 4x200 meter relays. Lauren Werth won the 100-meter dash in 13.27 seconds. Senior Lizzy Dale won the 400 in 1 minute, 6.02 seconds, while her sister Alyssa won the 1600 in 5 minutes, 51.15 seconds. Senior Jessica Jackson also picked up a win for Monroe, winning the 200 in 28.53 seconds.

"When we looked across our results across the board, I was really pleased," girls coach Doug Miller said. "I thought our kids ran well; we had some fast times. I came away real pleased with this."

In the field, freshman Abby Oudinot won the triple jump at 32'1". Monroe took first, second, and third in the shot put, with senior Tabitha Egli coming out on top with a career-best throw of 33' 8.5".

"That's getting it out there with some of the best," Doug Miller said. "I think Carol Ochsner has done a nice job with her and Angela Beaver. Those girls have been coming along real well. That's over a foot and a half farther than (Tabitha's) ever thrown."

Junior Tre Voegeli also had a career best in the pole vault, with a jump of 10'6".

"That was a big plus, as far as the meet goes," Doug Miller said, "and she had some nice jumps at 11 (feet)."

The Cheesemakers next event is the Fort Atkinson invitational. Miller said he was looking forward to watching his team compete against some tough competition.

"Well, the competition is going to be real strong, which is good because our best will be pushed," he said.
