MONROE - If Trevor Gorr's match Tuesday night is any indication of what awaits at the Bi-State Classic, Monroe wrestling fans will be on the edge of their seats after Christmas.
The junior recorded a two-point near fall with about 10 seconds to go in his 220-pound match to defeat Lena-Winslow/Stockton's Ty Harmston 5-4.
"It was all conditioning and hustle," Gorr said. "I was fortunate to come back."
Gorr took advantage after Harmston had blood time.
"It gave me a chance to see how he wrestled and how aggressive he was going to be," Gorr said. "I had to step up my game."
Monroe lost the dual match to Lena-Winslow/Stockton 41-24, but won six of the 12 matches wrestled.
"I thought our guys out-worked, out-hustled and out-techniqued them," Monroe Jeriamy Jackson said. "They are a tough team and have almost everyone back from last year."
Monroe junior Kevin Klopfenstein (138) and junior Dusty Burkhalter (182) each posted pins for the Cheesemakers. Klopfenstein pinned Zack Diaz in 2 minutes, 59 seconds and Burkhalter pinned Alex Dunlavey in 3:21.
Burkhalter said wrestling Gorr and sophomore Brett Zimmerman in practice has helped prepare him for his matches.
"They are a lot stronger," Burkhalter said. "I just tried to be aggressive the entire time. I just had to make sure the match went the way I wanted it to and not the way he wanted it to."
The Cheesemakers forfeited at 106 and 113.
"We forfeited a couple of matches or else it would have been a lot closer," Burkhalter said.
Gorr wasn't the only wrestler who had a nail-biting match. Monroe sophomore Ryan Hughes at 160 pulled off an escape and takedown in the second period to fuel a 4-3 win over Dakota Cain. Zimmerman at heavyweight also had a key escape and takedown in the second period to carry him to a 4-3 win over junior Jacob Weltzin. The other win for the Cheesmakers came from junior Aaron Hesgard (132) who defeated Pete Bonvillain 9-2.
"He has untapped potential," Jackson said of Zimmerman, who wrestled for the first time last year. "He is starting to find out that if he does the basic moves and techniques that will win matches.
The Cheesemakers didn't suffer any setbacks this year against Lena-Winslow. Last year, Monroe's Cody Stamm was carted off the mat on a stretcher after dislocating his knee cap.
Monroe will wrestle at the Bi-State Classic in La Crosse Dec. 29-30.
"It's trying to build going into Bi-State," Jackson said of the match against Lena-Winslow/Stockton. "Hopefully, we can get healthy because we have had some guys passing sickness around."
