MONONA - You can now declare the Monroe Cheesemakers' boys basketball team Badger South Conference champions.
Junior Bryan Tordoff scored the game's final four points to help Monroe erase a 41-38 deficit in the final 1:10 to give the Cheesemakers a conference championship-clinching 42-41 win over the Silver Eagles Thursday night.
Tordoff nailed a game-tying 3-pointer and moments later, made one of two free throws with nine seconds remaining to give Monroe the lead. After Tordoff missed the second free throw, Monona Grove grabbed the rebound and called time out with 7.5 seconds to play, but couldn't hit a game-winning shot.
Monroe trailed 21-19 at halftime and 35-32 after three quarters, but held the Silver Eagles to just six points in the fourth quarter to overtake Monona Grove.
Senior Kevin Frint followed up his 19 point effort Monday against Darlington with 16 points, while Tordoff scored 10 points, including three 3-pointers.
Monroe finishes the regular season 17-5 overall and captures the Badger South conference crown with a 10-2 mark. The Cheese-makers are the No. 1 seed in their regional in the upcoming Division 2 WIAA Tournament and will have a first-round bye. They will host the winner of Tuesday's regional quarterfinal between No. 5 Platteville and No. 4 Evansville Thursday.
