MONROE - The Monroe Cheesemakers have reached the sectional finals in girls softball seven of the past eight seasons. This season, Monroe will not have to contend with softball powerhouses Fort Atkinson which moved to Division 1 and Brodhead which has dropped to Division 3. The Cheesemakers are the No. 2 seed and will host seventh-seeded Mount Horeb to begin Division 2 regional play May 26.
The Brodhead Cardinals went to the sectional semifinal last year in Division 2 and lost to Fort Atkinson who rallied in the seventh inning to win. The Cardinals will find other top-quality teams in the Division 3 field such as No. 1 ranked Poynette, No. 2 ranked Lancaster, and No. 5 ranked Onalaska Luther as potential sectional opponents. Those four teams boast a combined record of 83-7. The Cardinals are a No. 1 seed with a first round bye and will meet either No. 4 Mineral Point or No. 5 Belleville in the second round May 31. Brodhead will also host the sectional semifinal June 7 with the sectional final June 10 at Boscobel.
Also in Division 3, New Glarus (No. 7) travels to Cuba City (No. 2) and Darlington (No. 6) will travel to Parkview (No. 3).
Can the Juda Panthers ride the arm of Amber Ramos and their No. 1 seeded team to the sectionals in Division 4 for the second straight year? Juda will get a first round bye and face the winner of Pecatonica (No. 5) at Argyle (No.4). Monticello (No. 3) will host sixth-seeded Albany and No. 7 seed Black Hawk travels to the No. 2 seed, Barneveld. If a Six Rivers East conference team reaches the sectional, they'll play in a familiar location as the sectional semifinal on June 7 is at Barneveld.
The state tournament will begin June 16 at the Goodman Diamond in Madison.
