JANESVILLE - Both Monroe freshman Brynn Ritschard and junior Maddie Kallgren had hat tricks scoring three goals to power the Monroe soccer team to a 7-3 win over Janesville Parker Saturday.
"I think for both of them it was really a confidence booster," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said. "It helps them believe a little bit more that they can do it. Maddie has scored a lot of goals in her career. It's nice for Brynn to score goals in a varsity match. A hat trick is a big accomplishment."
Monroe (1-1-1) scored three goals in the first 8 minutes.
O'Neill said the Cheesemakers set the tone with three goals early on.
Kallgren scored the first goal on an assist from Emily Frankowski at 2:11. Monroe freshman Reily Pond scored her first goal on a pass from Sami Curtis at 5:12 to give the Cheesemakers a 2-0 lead. Ritschard scored her first goal on an assist from freshman Morgan Seffrood at 8:12. Janesville Parker rallied answering by scoring three goals to tie the game at 3. Ritschard scored a goal off a corner kick at 24:29 to give the Cheesemakers the lead for good at 4-3.
"I thought we got a little complacent after we scored three goals," O'Neill said. "I think they sat back and just lost their focus for a couple of minutes."
Ritschard scored her second goal on an assist from Curtis to give the Cheesemakers a 5-0 lead at the half.
Kallgren scored two second-half goals. The first goal in the second half for Kallgren came on a pass from Ritschard that gave the Cheesemakers a 6-3 lead. Kallgren added an unassisted goal at 77:00.
Monroe senior Gwendolyn Ambrose had six saves, but was injured when a Janesville Parker player collided with her in the face. Pond played the last 15 minutes at goalie and had two saves.
Monroe will look to win its second straight game when they play at Cambridge at 6:45 p.m. today.
