PORTAGE - The Monroe girls basketball team had three players reach double figures as the Cheesemakers defeated Portage 51-45 in a WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinal Tuesday night.

Monroe (6-17) was led by senior Brooke McBain and sophomore Taylor Barrett who each scored 12 points. Monroe senior Molly Hlubek added 10 points. The Cheesemakers jumped out to a 16-8 first quarter lead and set the tone on the defensive end.

Five different Cheesemaker players scored in the first quarter and the Cheesemakers built a 27-17 halftime lead.

"The key in the first quarter is we got a little bit of confidence," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "It's one of those things when you hit a couple of shots and it gives you confidence and a little bit more energy."

Mathiason was excited with the Cheesemakers' defensive play.

"I told them after the game I was really proud of their defensive effort," Mathiason said. "We did a good job of making it tough on them."

With the win, Monroe advances to play at Monona Grove on Friday.

"Hopefully, we play with the same energy," he said.
