MADISON - The Monroe boys tennis team won just one match in the finals of the Badger Conference tournament and finished third place in the Badger South.

Madison Edgewood won the Badger South conference title. The Cheesemakers finished third in the Badger South behind Oregon and tied the Panthers for fourth place overall in the tournament.

"To come out of today with only one team point was a disappointment for the team," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said.

The Cheesemakers lost every semifinal match. Monroe senior Taylor Soddy at No. 1 singles lost to Fort Atkinson's Andrew Dahl 6-2, 6-1. He then lost to Madison Edgewood's Patrick McKenna 6-1, 2-6, 6-3. At No. 2 singles, Monroe sophomore Kevin Noriega lost to Waunakee's Joey Schneider 6-3, 6-2. He then lost to Oregon's Alec Onesti 6-2, 6-3. Monroe sophomore Matt Monahan finished third place. Monahan lost to Edgewood's Connor Maloney 6-0, 6-2. Monahan then defeated Oregon's Dakota Tollakson by injury default. Monahan entered the conference tournament losing four of five matches against Tollakson.

"Matt was playing one of his best and smartest matches, and then Tollakson went down with a leg injury and had to injury default," Saugstad said. "Matt grew a lot as a player at this tournament."

Noriega had a tough road playing Schneider in the semifinals and Onesti, who had beat him five straight times.

"In all honesty, Schneider would be a No. 1 singles player for almost anyone else in the conference besides Waunakee," Saugstad said.

Monroe senior Josh Riese and junior Mark Jenson lost to Stoughton's No. 1 tandem in three sets 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. Riese and Jenson then lost to Milton's top team 6-1, 6-1.

"Mark and Josh had lost to Stoughton 6-0, 6-1," Saugstad said. "Mark and Josh started out on a roll and took the first set, before Stoughton made some adjustments that we just couldn't answer."
