MADISON - The Cheesemakers finished third overall in the Badger South after the conference tournament was capped on Saturday.
Monroe had a combined total of 16 team points, good enough for fifth overall in the Badger and two points ahead of Oregon in the south. Madison Edgewood dominated the South, scoring 54 points to win the entire event, with Waunakee (43) taking top honors in the North.
Leading the Cheesemakers were the team's top two doubles tandems, both of which took fourth place and scored three points apiece.
At No. 1 doubles, Brooke McBain and Ellie Grossen had a first round bye before beating Baraboo's Kayla Fuller and Melissa Miller 7-5, 6-2. Then Monroe's top duo lost to third-seeded Beth Paradish and Mandy Rice of Waunakee, 6-2, 6-0. In the third place match, Monroe fell to Monona Grove's Emma Wilson and Greta Schneider 6-4, 7-5.
Chandra McGuire and Ashley Segner, Monroe's No. 2 doubles team, beat Reedsburg 6-1, 6-3 in the first round and then edged out DeForest's Molly Franz and Andrea Wilson in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. The pair of Cheesemakers then fell to Edgewood's Morgan Molitor and Marieke VanRybroek, the eventual champions, 6-1, 6-1. In the third place match, McGuire and Segner fell again, this time to Baraboo's Anne Kent and Sabrina Fuller, 6-3, 6-3.
Scoring two points for Monroe for fifth place finishes include the No. 3 doubles tandem of Erin Gellings and Allie Coplien, who lost in the second round. Ellie Shuda, at No. 1 singles, as well as Erica Hegi (No. 3 singles) and Macayla Quinn (No. 4 singles) also scored two points for a first-round win.
Subsectionals and sectionals for the WIAA Division 2 tournament are next week.
