OREGON - A month ago the Monroe Cheesemakers found themselves winless in their first four Badger South conference matches. That is now a distant memory.
The Cheesemakers are playing with confidence heading into the postseason after sweeping the Oregon Panthers on Thursday, 25-22, 25-22, 25-22.
"The girls are playing real well," said Monroe head coach Dave Gersbach. "We're ready to step into the regionals next week. We're playing in end-of-season form and up to our No. 2 seed."
Gers-bach feels that the turning point of the season came last week with an Oct. 6 win over conference leader Madison Edgewood.
"Whatever doubt we had in our minds was squashed with that," Gersbach said.
Against Oregon, Monroe's senior trio of Jamie Armstrong, Jessica Wyssbrod, and Chelsea Wyss kept the Cheesemakers in control throughout the night. Armstrong blasted 15 kills and stuffed the Panthers with seven blocks. Wyssbrod had seven aces and 19 digs and Wyss led the Cheesemakers in digs with 22.
With the No. 2 seed, Monroe (19-8, 6-6 in the Badger South) will host seventh-seeded Evansville Tuesday in the WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinals. Last year, the Cheesemakers were knocked out of the regionals by eventual state tournament qualifier, Brodhead. Edgerton is the regional's No. 1 seed this year.
