ELKHORN - After a back-and-forth first half, stifling defense in the second half lifted the Monroe girls basketball team over Elkhorn Saturday in a 49-34 road victory.

Monroe (4-6, 1-3 Badger South) led by just five points at half before pulling away in the third and fourth quarters. Monroe outscored Elkhorn 25-15 in the second half, led by a game-high 18 points from senior Alacia Keegan. Keegan also knocked down three 3-pointers. Sophomore Lexi Hilliard chipped in nine points for Monroe.

"In that third, we were able to hold our lead," coach Sam Mathiason said of the Cheesemakers' defense, which held Elkhorn to six points in the third quarter. "In the fourth, we got the lead up to 20 at one point.

"It was a great team effort. I thought we were able to move the ball and get some kids some extra shots, so that was good to see."

Leading the way for Elkhorn were Abbie Kolacke and Bianca Trombley, who each chipped in 10 points.

Monroe will host Monona Grove Thursday.
