MILTON - After the host Red Hawks scored to take an early 1-0 advantage within the opening two minutes, the Cheesemakers responded with perhaps their best game of the season en route to a 4-2 victory.
"This was a great game," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said. "Everyone stepped it up and played their best game. After (Milton) scored, our team decided that it was going to be their game tonight, and they responded with fantastic play."
Tying the score at 12 minutes, 38 seconds off an assist from Madeline Knutson was sophomore Maddie Kallgren. Kallgren scored again at 14:56 to keep her one goal shy of the notorious hat trick, while teammate Gabby Ludwig gave the Cheesemakers a 3-1 halftime lead with a score at 30:32.
After halftime, Milton cut into the Cheesemakers lead in the 50th minute, but Monroe was well equipped to answer right back. Shortly after, Sammy Curtis scored off of a perfectly placed pass from Ludwig.
Providing the defense for the Cheesemakers between the posts was senior Shyanna Kelley, who collected 11 saves.
