Cheese run to sixth place

PLATTEVILLE - The Monroe girls cross country team keeps building for a championship season - the WIAA Division 2 Platteville sectional later this month.

The Cheesemakers had five runners in the top 40 led by sophomore Lizzy Dale who finished 23rd in the large school division in a personal-record time of 16 minutes, 42 seconds. Fellow sophomore Abby Rogerson took 24th (16:56). Freshman Nicole Witt finished 34th with a PR of 17:15, junior Chelsea Haffele took 39th (17:24) and junior Molly Hlubek was 40th (17:35). Monroe finished sixth overall.

Dodgeville-Mineral Point won the large school division 45-80 over Madison Edgewood. Platteville junior Tricia Serres set a course record finishing with a time of 14:22. Darlington placed five runners in the top 16 to run away with the small school title 44-80 over Fennimore.

Freshman Therese Hughes took 41st (17:36 and senior Rachel Rogerson was 47th (17:47). Monroe and Dodgeville-Mineral Point were the only teams with all runners at 17:50 or faster.

"Realistically we should have been fourth but things didn't go our way," Monroe girls cross country coach Brian Jefferson said. "We will overcome that. The good thing is we get to run the same course against all the same teams on the 23rd at sectionals. "Our depth took a big step forward with the continuing improvement of junior Chelsea Haffele and the emergence of freshman Therese Hughes both of whom PR'd as well. As soon as we get on the same page we are going to open some eyes. It will be an exciting time."

New Glarus-Monticello finished eighth as a team. New Glarus-Monticello junior LouAnn Judd finished 19th (16:34) to lead the Knights. Sophomore Madeline Brunner took 31st (17:09) and Amanda Kaiser was 35th (17:17).

In the small school division, the Redbirds had three runners in the top 10 led by sophomore Cheyenne Wolfe, second (15:58), junior Amy Jorgenson, seventh (16:21) and junior Hannah Robiolio, eighth (16:23).

Darlington freshman Claire Cullen took 11th (16:40) and senior Kayla Lange was 16th (16:52).

Albany finished fourth out of 12 teams and freshman Bailey Hlavachek took fourth (16:07) to lead the Comets. Pecatonica-Argyle junior Kendra Sigg finished sixth with a time of 16:20 to lead the Vikings.

Albany had four runners in the top 26. Senior Rosy Bauman took 19th (16:59), junior Jessica Mauerman finished 25th (17:16) and junior Ciara Kubesh was 26th (17:17).
