Cheese run to 3rd at regional

MCFARLAND - The Monroe girls track team will send five individuals and two relay teams to the sectional after their performances in the WIAA Division 2 McFarland regional Tuesday.

Monroe sophomore Jordan Hirsbrunner qualified for the Viroqua sectional in three events including the 300-meter intermediate hurdles where she won a regional championship in 47.78 seconds. Hirsbrunner also finished second place in the 110 hurdles (17.16) and second place in the high jump (5 feet, 2 inches). The top four finishers in each event advance to the sectional.

Monroe finished third place in the regional as a team (89 points). McFarland edged Madison Edgewood for the regional title 118-113.

"We qualified a few more people for the sectional than I thought we would," Monroe girls track coach Matt Davis said. "I think overall the girls were happy with their performance."

Monroe sophomore Alicia Kuester finished second place in the triple jump (32-1) and second in the long jump (15-4).

"We knew it was going to be close in the long jump," Davis said of Kuester qualifying for the sectional. "She pulled through."

Sophomore teammate Josie Eberle took second in the pole vault (9-0) and senior Ramsey Benkert was third (8-6). Sugar River sophomore Krista Diaz was the regional champion in the 100 hurdles (15.89) and took second in the 300 hurdles (49.18). Monroe's Casey Rielly took fourth in the 100 hurdles (17.86).

"We knew it was going to be close," Davis said of Rielly qualifying in the 100 hurdles. "When the pressure was on she pulled through. It was a bonus."

The Cheesemakers' 3,200 relay team of Isabel Bazley, Mya Waterman, Rachel Meier and Ciara Kaderly finished fourth in the 3,200 relay (10:11.59). Bazley teamed with MacKenzie Hesgard, Makayla Phillips and Eberle to take third in the 400 relay (52.99).

Brodhead-Juda freshman Cora Purdue won the regional title in the 800 (2:20.85). Freshman teammate Madee Harding took third in the high jump (5-0), third in the 100 (13.21) and third in the 400 (1:02.41). Harding teamed with Morgan Adkins, Purdue and Taylor Bluemel to take second in the 3,200 relay (10:02.40). Bluemel finished third in the 1,600 (5:22.54) and fourth in the 800 (2:26.68).

Sugar River junior Madalena Macht won the triple jump (32-5 1/2) and finished third in the long jump (15-0 1/4). Sugar River sophomore Noelle Marie took second place in the 3,200 (11:30.2).

The Raiders' 800 relay team of Logan Fahey, Ashley Clark, Grace Schulting and Macht took second (1:52.37). Schulting was fourth in the long jump (14-10). Fahey added a fourth-place finish in the 200 (28.40). Clark took fourth place in the pole vault (8-0).

Brodhead-Juda's 1,600 relay team finished third (4:22.92).
