MONROE - Maddie Kallgren scored four goals to power the Monroe girls soccer team to a 10-0 win over Platteville Saturday.

With the win, the Cheesemakers (6-7-2, 0-3 Badger South) snapped a three-game losing streak.

"This was just a good game to work on some things, the junior said. "It's just nice to have a game to relax so we can play just our game. There is not so much pressure. We want to let the other team know that we are here to push the pace and score some goals on them."

The Cheesemakers did that, erupting for seven goals in the first half. Kallgren scored her first goal at 2 minutes, 29 seconds. Moments later, Kallgren scored her second goal on an assist from freshman Reily Pond on a breakaway to give the Cheesemakers a 2-0 lead. Kallgren beat the goalie on a breakaway and scored on a shot to the far post.

It was a team effort for the Cheesemakers. Monroe junior midfielder Shannon Robotski scored two goals and Pond had two assists.

"It boosts the team morale," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said. "It makes them feel like they can win and score goals again."

Robotski scored her first goal on an assist from Pond to give the Cheesemakers a 3-0 lead. Freshman Morgan Seffrood scored a goal on an assist from Jenna Crook and freshman Brynn Ritschard scored on a pass from Kallgren to extend the Cheesemakers' lead to 5-0. Payton Noble and Kallgren added first-half goals to give the Cheesemakers an insurmountable 7-0 lead.

The only concern for the Cheesemakers in the first half was they were called for 12 offside penalties.

O'Neill said it's good to have an offside call or two while attacking on offense. However, she made a point to have the Cheesemakers be more aware while attacking.

"They were really timing those runs so much better in the second half," O'Neill said. "We didn't get as many called."

O'Neill made some switches in the second half moving freshman middle defender Kennedy Ludwig to a forward position. The move paid off as Robotski scored her second goal on an assist from Ludwig. Kallgren hammered in a breakaway goal to give the Cheesemakers a 9-0 lead. Senior Emily Frankowski scored the final goal at 69:12 to give the Cheesemakers the win.

"It was Emily Frankowski's birthday and the team wanted her to score a goal and she did," O'Neill said.

O'Neill doesn't plan on playing Ludwig as a midfielder or forward against stronger teams if the Cheesemakers need to generate more offense.

"She's an extremely good defender," O'Neill said of Ludwig. "That is her spot. She just wanted a change of pace. That is why we moved her up top. Kennedy just works so hard and puts in so much effort."

Monroe senior goalkeeper Gwendolyn Ambrose had seven saves in the first half and Pond had four saves in the second half.
