MONONA - The Monroe wrestling team posted three pins and rolled to a 54-22 win in a dual match over Monona Grove-McFarland Thursday.

The Cheesemakers got pins from senior Dempzy Foley at 182 pounds, sophomore Julian Gruber (195) and sophomore Bodie Minder (220). Monroe won six of the eight matches wrestled. Monroe's Zach Roper (120), junior Gabe Witt (132), senior Travis Wolf (152) and sophomore Patrick Rielly (160) won on forfeits by the Silver Eagles.

"We did what we needed to do," Monroe coach Tom Witt said. "The kids they put on the mat were not at our level."

Foley, ranked No. 8 in the Division 2 Wisconsin Wrestling Online state poll at 182, pinned Monona Grove-McFarland's Hans Schwoerer in 24 seconds. Foley now has 23 pins and is four pins away from breaking the school record (26). Gruber (195) pinned the Silver Eagles' Connor Fraiser in 1 minute, 49 seconds. Minder (220) pinned Monona Grove-McFarland's Reese Barker in 1:07.

At heavyweight, Monroe senior Tyson Welsch, ranked No. 9, returned from a shoulder injury and knocked off Kristian Schlicht 7-0. Monroe senior Sam Kind (170), ranked No. 6, defeated Tysen White 10-3.

Witt said Welsch wrestled well in his return from injury.

The Cheesemakers will host the Monroe Invitational at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. The invitational features 12 teams including Black Hawk-Darlington.

"As a team our goal is always to win it," Witt said. "There will be good competition there. I think it's a good tournament for us to get some wins under our belt."
