MONONA - The Monroe Cheesemakers scored six runs in the sixth inning to come from behind and beat the Monona Grove Silver Eagles 9-4 in a Badger South Conference game Tuesday.
The win snapped a three-game conference losing streak for Monroe.
The Cheesemakers fell behind 3-0 in the third inning, but tied it 3-3 in the top of the fifth, only to see Monona Grove get a run in the bottom of the inning off of sophomore Becca Armstrong.
That set the stage for Monroe's comeback in the sixth.
Sophomore Heather Barta put the Cheesemakers in front at 5-4, with a two-run single. Senior Kaylee Craigo followed with a run-scoring infield single, then freshman Chandra McGuire hit a change up for a triple to right field that scored two more funs. McGuire later scored on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Ellie Grossen.
The Silver Eagles threatened in their half of the sixth when they loaded the bases. But junior centerfielder Kasey Gutzmer made a running catch of a line drive in right-center to thwart the rally.
"That was a nice defensive play," Monroe head coach Dale Buvid said. "It was the play of the game. That saved three runs."
Senior Kristin McArdle led the Cheesemakers at the plate, going 3 for 4 while Grossen went 2 for 3. Armstrong pitched all seven innings, giving up four runs, but only two earned runs and eight hits. She struck out five and walked three.
"It's good to get a win again against a quality team," Buvid said.
Monroe (8-6, 5-5 Badger South) will host Oregon Friday.
