EAST TROY - Monroe senior Kelli Isaj had a hat trick in leading Monroe to a 6-2 win over Portage-Poynette at the East Troy Invitational Saturday.

"It's very nice he was able to get the hat trick," Monroe coach Tony Stamm said of Isaj. "He works so hard. He's so dedicated to soccer. I'm glad he finally got that one."

Monroe (6-7-2) came a shootout away from winning the invite. Monroe exploded for four first-half goals to beat Portage-Poynette. The Cheesemakers scored three goals in the first 15 minutes. Senior Kelli Isaj scored the first of his three goals on an assist from Bob Seichter at 7:09. Monroe junior Jason Atkinson then scored off an assist from Isaj at 10:30. Junior Kyle Williams scored a goal at 14:55 on a pass from senior Jens Wohlbier to give the Cheesemakers a 3-0 lead. Isaj scored a goal at 23:50 to give the Cheesemakers a 4-0 lead at halftime.

Freshman Blake Duffy scored at 55:15 to give the Cheesemakers a commanding 5-0 lead. Isaj capped the scoring with his third goal in the 64th minute.

Monroe senior Kramer Henning had five saves and Williams added four.

Also Saturday, the Cheesemakers played East Troy to a tie at 1 after 70 minutes, but lost in a shootout 4-1. Isaj scored the only goal in the shootout.

The Cheesemakers would not have got to a shootout if it hadn't been for the late-game heroics of freshman Alex Hendrickson. Hendrickson scored a header goal off Isaj's free kick at 33:35 to tie the game at 1 to force a shootout.

"We felt like we could have won the tournament," Stamm said. "It was disappointing to lose in a shootout."

Monroe will get back into Badger South Conference play with a game at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Stoughton.
