WAUKESHA - The Monroe High School girls tennis team went undefeated Friday in the first day of the Mukwonago Tournament.
Monroe bested Pius XI High School 5-2, winning two out of four singles matches and all three doubles. Against Beloit Memorial High School, Monroe won all seven matches.
Monroe senior Maggie Setterstrom went 1-1 at No. 1 singles, as did sophomore Emma Towne at No. 3 singles. Sophomores Grace Tostrud and Skye Allen went 2-0 at Nos. 2 and 4 singles, respectively.
Monroe's doubles teams - consisting of senior Hallie Signer and sophomore Jensen Christensen; seniors Parris Bunker and Kiara Miller; and juniors Jessa Lucas and Becky Thoman at Nos. 1, 2 and 3, respectively - all went 2-0.
"We did exactly what we needed to do on day one of the tournament to set ourselves up with a chance to win the tournament on day two," said Monroe coach Brad Saugstad. "We are tied for first with Mukwonago right now."
Saugstad said Bunker and Miller had one of the team's best days, rebounding from a losing set against Pius to take the match before defeating Beloit Memorial without conceding a point.
"They started poaching more, their volleys got crisper and they started playing how they do during practice," Saugstad said.
Saugstad also praised Tostrud, commending her "good job of keeping balls in play," as well as Signer and Christensen's team.
Saugstad also noted Setterstrom's tenaciousness in her match against Pius, which she only lost after a 2.5-hour match.
"You could not have found two more evenly matched opponents," Saugstad said.
Monroe will face Lake Mills, Menomonee Falls and Waukesha West today.
"These will be challenging matches, especially because we will be missing half of our usual singles lineup because of some family obligations," Saugstad said. "I still feel confident that we will be able to have a successful day tomorrow."
