MONROE - After Milton blitzed Monroe 7-1 in the Badger South opener, Cheesemakers coach Tony Stamm said it seemed like the Red Hawks were playing with 12 players on the field.
"We usually have guys faster than most teams," Stamm said. "Tonight they were faster than us. They knew how to really position themselves. It seemed like they have been playing together for a long time. Their spacing was very good. They knew where they wanted to attack. They were working as one."
The Red Hawks scored four first half goals and had three players with two goals each including senior forward Joel Addie, junior midfielder Sam Novak and junior forward Kevin Kolloff. With the loss, Monroe drops to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the Badger South.
Addie opened the attack by scoring a breakaway goal at 8 minutes, 50 seconds. Novak followed that up by attacking the net and splitting two defenders and beating Monroe senior goalkeeper Kramer Henning, who came out of the goal.
"They were quicker," Monroe senior Kelli Isaj said, who scored a goal in the 73rd minute to help the Cheesemakers avoid the shutout. "They were controlling the ball better than us. We need to have more passes. We are just kicking the ball around. That's why we are not having success."
Milton senior midfielder Jacob Deininger scored a goal at 31:56 to give the Red Hawks a 3-0 lead. Addie gave the Red Hawks a boost right before the half when he scored his second goal on an assist from Nady Banker.
The Cheesemakers had a couple of golden scoring opportunities in the second half. Isaj had a header shot in the 44th minute, but Milton senior goalkeeper Jon Haas made a diving save. Monroe senior Mitch Marty powered a shot at the goal about a minute later, but Haas made the save.
The Red Hawks scored three goals in less than three minutes late in the second half to take a 7-0 lead. Isaj scored his goal at 72:03 on a cross by junior Belsazar Castellanos.
"We are trying," Isaj said. "We just need more passes. Their goalie was a good keeper. They were a good team. We miss those guys from last year."
Stamm likes the strides the Cheesemakers made in the second half. Henning had four saves for the Cheesemakers who host Sauk Prairie in a Badger Conference crossover game at 5 p.m. Thursday at Honey Creek Park.
"I'm glad to see our guys stayed together," Stamm said. "They never gave up. They really improved in the second half. Our passing game came together and our marking came up. That makes such a big difference."
