JANESVILLE - The Monroe wrestling team went 3-2 to finish third place in the season-opening Janesville Parker dual meet tournament Saturday.

The Cheesemakers rolled to a 67-0 win over Rockford Guilford and knocked off the Sauk Prairie varsity reserves 56-12. Monroe lost to Random Lake 40-21. Random Lake, ranked fifth in Division 3, returns four state qualifiers. Kenosha Bradford edged the Cheesemakers 38-31 and Monroe beat Janesville Parker 45-24. Random Lake won the dual team championship going 5-0 and Kenosha Bradford was second after finishing 4-1.

A trio of wrestlers went 5-0 on the day including junior Cole Murray at 132 pounds, senior Traiten Gorr (220) and junior Kyle Walter (heavyweight).

Both senior Ian Salzwedel (152) and senior McKenzy Foley (170) finished 4-1.

"My goal for the team was to have a winning record," Monroe coach Tom Witt said. "We could have gone 4-1 if some of the close matches against Kenosha Bradford went the other way. The kids fought hard all day. It's a good start for us. I thought our conditioning was pretty good. We do have to get better."

With his performance, Gorr eclipsed the 100 career-win milestone. He picked up his 100th career win in the second round of the duals, defeating a Sauk Prairie wrestler in a technical fall in 3 minutes, 27 seconds.

"Getting it (100th career win) this early in the season he has a chance to get the all-time record," Witt said.

Salzwedel also proved that he will be a major contributor this year. He has wrestled some varsity matches before, but this year he is expected to be a workhorse in the varsity lineup.

"He (Salzwedel) wrestled really well," Witt said. "Nothing flashy. He was just really solid."

The Cheesemakers had five wrestlers finish 3-2 including freshman Gabe Witt (106), David Andrews (120), sophomore Sam Kind (138), junior Dempzy Foley (160) and junior Isaac Allen (182).

In the match against Random Lake, Murray pinned Austin Udovich in 3:51. Salzwedel clipped Grayson Vandenbush 1-0. Gorr pinned Random Lake's Ben Drenski in 3:27.

The Cheesemakers had a tight match against Kenosha Bradford. Gorr posted a 10-0 win against Kenosha Bradford. Walter and Allen won by pins. Murray pulled out a 10-7 win.

Monroe will open up the Badger South Conference season with a home opener against Milton Friday.

"It will be a big challenge," Witt said. "They have some really good lower weights."

The Cheesemakers won just one match against the Red Hawks last year.

"I'm hoping to win a few more matches this year," Witt said.
