SPRING GREEN - The Monroe golf team finished in sixth place out of seven teams Wednesday at the Badger South Conference Meet at House on the Rock Resort.
"It was an extremely windy day for golf, probably the worst wind that I have seen the kids play in, or that I have ever played in for that matter," Monroe head coach Jeriamy Jackson said. "Because of the way the course is set up, the wind swirls; so in one moment it is coming from behind your back but then seconds later it was right in your face, so judging what club to hit became very challenging."
Brandon Wilson paced the Cheesemakers with a 12-over par 84. Mitch McArdle shot an 87, Kyle Bruce had a 95, and Aaron Krattiger and Garrett Voegeli each carded a 96.
"We didn't shoot as well as we would have liked. Once again we had some very big numbers on a few holes that really kill a round," Jackson said. "Brandon Wilson was able to hold on to the second spot in the overall standings for the Southern Badger Conference all-conference awards. He was able to turn it around after shooting a 45 on the front nine, which is the easier of the two. To then come back with a 39 on the back side was a great accomplishment."
Monroe has a week to regain its stroke before regionals, which are scheduled for Tuesday at the Grand Geneva Highlands course in Lake Geneva.
"We are to the point in the season now where you either shoot well or you don't go on. We need to start focusing on what will get us to the next level of competition and this is an attainable goal for us as a team and certainly for some individuals," Jackson said.
"All we can do is continue to work hard and find a way to move on."
