OREGON - The Monroe girls basketball team rolled to a 65-36 win over Oregon Friday night by turning up its defense.
The Panthers led Monroe 13-8 after the first quarter, but the Cheesemakers clamped down and shutout Oregon in the second quarter.
With the win Monroe (11-2, 7-1 Badger South) snapped the Panthers' seven game winning streak.
"We looked like a different team from both ends of the floor," Monroe coach Kevin Keen said. "We played with that intensity. We knew they would be a tough test for us. Our kids really rose to the occasion."
Monroe junior Ashley Hermanson led the Cheesemakers with a game-high 25 points. Fellow junior Jamie Armstrong had 12 points and sophomore Kyleigh Sellnow had 10 points.
The Cheesemakers outscored the Panthers 19-0 in the second quarter.
"We turned it on from there," Keen said. "It was an outstanding defensive effort."
Monroe, ranked seventh in the Associated Press Division 2 state poll, made 20-of-28 free throws.
"It was a good team win," Keen said. "It was a great team effort on both ends of the floor."
