MADISON - Finding a way to win might define the Monroe girls basketball team the last several years.
Monroe junior Kylee Ritschard scored a team-high 13 points to lead Monroe to a 47-34 win over Madison La Follette Tuesday night.
The Cheesemakers (2-0) raced out to a 17-10 lead, but the Lancers used a pressure defense to keep it close.
"It wasn't a pretty game," Monroe coach Kevin Keen said. "It was a tough physical game and we were able to survive."
Monroe senior Jamie Armstrong scored 11 points and Ashley Hermanson had 10. Fellow senior Gwen Sutter added seven.
Keen is excited Ritschard is developing as another scoring option.
"Kylee is a battler," he said. "She gets in there and works hard. She is very scrappy."
Keen understands the Cheesemakers will have to rise to the occasion with their first Badger South game Friday against Madison Edgewood.
"We will have to be a lot better against Edgewood on Friday," Keen said.
