MONROE - When it comes time to seed for the subsectional, the Monroe boys tennis doubles teams will have a leg up on Jefferson after the Cheesemakers swept three doubles matches en route to a 5-2 dual match win over the Eagles Thursday.

"Last year we started the season 1-6 and lost to Jefferson, so getting a 5-2 win tonight was a nice win for the boys," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "I was very impressed with the play of our No. 1 and 2 doubles teams. All four of the guys just didn't hit the ball well, but were moving to the right spots and putting the volleys away early."

With the win, Monroe improves to 3-2. The Cheesemakers' No. 1 doubles team of seniors Matt Monahan and Kevin Noriega defeated Jefferson's Ben Rupprecht and Marcus Thoma 6-0, 6-1. At No. 2 doubles, Monroe senior Jeremy Miller and sophomore Kody Althaus defeated Jefferson's Bryant Bear and Zach Hoffman 6-0, 6-0.

Monroe senior Keyton Friske and sophomore Tanner Purdy at No. 3 doubles beat Jefferson's Nicholas Hoover and Adrian Storey 6-4, 6-3. With Cole Oudinot battling an illness, Purdy stepped up at No. 3 doubles.

"They put their serves and returns in, got up to the net and did a nice job of keeping more balls in the court of their opponents."

Monroe senior David Shon at No. 1 singles defeated Jefferson senior Ty Jay 6-1, 6-3 and senior Rhett Katzenberger at No. 4 singles beat Jefferson senior Daniel Glascock in three sets 2-6, 7-5, 6-2.

"David just overpowered Jay throughout the match," Saugstad said. "David has really taken his game to another level since the start of last year."

After losing the first set, Katzenberger battled back to win two straight sets.

"Rhett was struggling early and getting down on himself, but to his credit he regained his composure, started keeping more balls in play and came back to win."

Jefferson senior Nathan Poser defeated Monroe senior Zach Hendrickson at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, Jefferson senior Spencer O'Brien beat Monroe sophomore Silas Setterstrom in three sets 6-0, 2-6, 6-3.

"Silas played a quality opponent and battled, but couldn't pull out the three-set win," Saugstad said. "I felt bad for Silas tonight. Due to our court setup and having varsity matches at Recreation Park and Northeast Park, Silas was on his own most of the night. Silas got into the match. Hopefully, he will have a chance to play him again later in the season."
