MADISON - The Monroe girls basketball team remained unbeaten and completed a season sweep of Madison Edgewood by pulling out a 56-44 win over the Crusaders Tuesday night.

Monroe (13-0, 7-0 Badger South) and ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press and Coaches Polls, remains in the driver's seat for another conference championship.

"This is the second round," Monroe coach Kevin Keen said about the second time through the conference. "We knew it would be a battle. It's definitely a good win for us."

Edgewood outscored the Cheesemakers 13-12 in the first quarter. Monroe led 25-23 at halftime. The Cheesemakers opened the fourth quarter with a 39-33 lead. The lead remained at least five points the rest of the game due to the Cheesemakers' free throw shooting.

Monroe made nine of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter to maintain its lead.

Monroe senior Gwen Sutter scored 14 points and made all eight free throws she attempted. Fellow senior Ashley Hermanson also scored 14 points. Junior Kylee Ritschard scored nine of her 11 points in the second quarter.

Senior Jamie Armstrong scored nine and Chelsea Brice had six.

"Kylee did an outstanding job," Keen said. "It was good balance."

Monroe hosts Oregon Saturday in another Badger South Conference game.
