Cheese advance in 28 events

ORFORDVILLE - Monroe is advancing to sectionals in 17 boys events and 11 girls events.

The boys team won the team title at the WIAA Division 2 Orfordville Regional on Monday, scoring 164.5 points, out-pacing second-place Beloit Turner by 73 points. Edgerton (91) was third, Sugar River (83) fourth and Brodhead-Juda (65) finished sixth. The top four finishers in every event move on to Thursday's sectional meet in Boscobel.

Monroe's Dylan Starck won the 800-meter race with a time of 1:57.11, finishing ahead of Sugar River's Dennis Haak (2nd) and fellow Cheesemaker Joel Henry (fourth).

Sugar River's Ryan McCoy edged Stark by just 2/100ths of a second in the 1,600, and Brodhead-Juda's Dan Drewes came in fourth. McCoy also won the 3,200, and Monroe's Steven Christiansen was fourth, narrowly beating out teammate Luke Peterson by two seconds to advance.

In the 110 high hurdles, Sugar River's John Beckman (second), Monroe's Caleb Ahrens (third) and Brodhead-Juda's Levi Frost (fourth) all advance. Frost and Monroe's Tyler Witt move on in the 300 hurdles.

Monroe's 800 relay team missed out on advancing by just :0.33 seconds.

The Cheesemakers did advance two relays: The 1,600 relay and 3,200 relay. Sugar River also advanced its 3,200 relay team.

Senior Michael Barrett and freshman Jake Hirsbrunner finished 1-2 in the high jump to advance, and Cameron Wahl and Jeffrey Hill moved on in the pole vault. Hill, who went to state last year in the pole vault and earlier this season posted a school record mark of 14-feet, 4 inches early this season, needed to out-leap Sugar River's Wesley Morgan for the final spot at 12 feet.

Barrett also advanced in the long jump, along with Sugar River freshman Garrison Woods. Woods moved on in the triple jump along with two Cardinals: Michael Peterson and Joey Jordan.

Nick Walker and Michael Kohn grabbed qualifying spots in both the shot put and the discuss for the Cheesemakers.

On the girls side, Monroe advances three relay teams (400, 800, 1,600) and three pole vaulters.

Assistant coach Dick Glendenning, who was inducted into the Wisconsin Track and Field Hall of Fame earlier this year, is the guide to the pole vaulters. Maria Eberle, Maria Pecora and Corrine Frutiger represent three of the four advancing pole vaulters.

Freshman Lauren Werth is moving on in the 100-meter dash.

Brodhead-Juda's Shannon Klein is advancing in the 200 and 400, teammate Camilla Klar moves on in the 1,600, and Sugar River's Alexis Hanson (200) and Amanda Kaiser (1,600) also advance.

In the hurdles, Monroe's Jaclyn Ditter and Sugar River's Victoria Ortgiesen ran the show. Ortgiesen edged Ditter in both the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles. Savanna Atkins (100) and Emily Diaz (300) also advance for the Raiders in the hurdles.

Sugar River will bring along two relay teams to Boscobel (400, 800) and Brodhead-Juda advances its 1,600 relay team.

Ashley Brusveen of Sugar River and Brodhead's Carly Mohns move on in the high jump. Mohns out-jumped Monroe's Taylor Barrett in a jump-off to move on.

Monroe's Brenna Bazley and Sugar River's Madeline Brunner advance in the long jump and Cheyenne Foster moves on in the triple jump for the Cheesemakers.

The Cardinals advance Heather Clankie and Mohns in the shot put, where they will be joined by Sugar River's Jessica Putland. Monroe senior Jess Leu was 1 1/4 inches behind Mohns for the fourth and final qualifying spot.

Clankie and teammate Alicia Condon move on in the discus, but Sugar River's Alex Walters missed out by just to inches.

Madison Edgewood won the team title on the girls side, finishing with 120.5 points. McFarland (113) was second, Sugar River (108.5) came in third, Monroe (106) finished fourth and Brodhead-Juda (69) took fifth.
