ARGYLE - Middle hitter Jessica Treuthardt wasn't surprised when the Argyle volleyball team had to scramble running a new formation.
With its top setter not playing in a WIAA Division 4 regional, the Orioles switched to a 6-2 set with two new setters. Ithaca found the holes in Argyle's defense and upset the Orioles, sweeping three sets 25-22, 25-14, 25-15 in a Division 4 regional quarterfinal Tuesday, Oct. 22.
"We were kind of in a tough spot," Treuthardt said. "We just put in a new formation at practice. With our new rotations we were a little confused at times and didn't get to our spots. They found the holes really well."
Argyle freshman Kayla Butler-Paulson is the Orioles usual setter, but she missed the match. Argyle coach Shelby Rideout declined to say why she missed the match.
"It's not something we have done all year," Rideout said of running a 6-2 with two setters. "I think it was too much change and too little time to practice. I'm proud of them. They played well considering the circumstances."
The Orioles struggled with passing in the second and third sets and were plagued by some defensive breakdowns in the second and third sets. The Orioles had 10 service errors in the match.
"I think our serving kind of killed us," Treuthardt said.
Treuthardt helped the Orioles get off to a hot start in the first set with a kill. Argyle junior Jenna Langmeier then had two aces to give the Orioles a 3-0 lead. The Bulldogs battled back to take a 13-11 lead on Maria Mueller's tip. Treuthardt had an ace late in the game to give the Orioles a 15-13 lead. The Bulldogs scored a key point on a long volley to take a 22-21 lead. Mueller then delivered an ace and the Orioles set the ball into the net as the Bulldogs pulled out the first set.
Ithaca junior Jessica Laue, who had a match-high 21 kills and seven blocks, helped set the tone for the Bulldogs in the second set. She had three kills and two tips as the Bulldogs scored 11 straight points in the second set to take a 22-11 lead. The Orioles couldn't recover and had four service errors in the second and third sets. Argyle struggled to make consistent passes to their setters.
"I thought we played pretty well," Rideout said. "I just wish we served better. I feel like serving was the difference in all of the games."
Argyle junior Kylie Johnsen had six kills to lead the Orioles. Junior Jenna Langmeier had nine assists and added three aces. Senior outside hitter Rachel Saalsaa racked up 10 digs and Treuthardt had two blocks.
The Orioles and Bulldogs played a tight match to start the third set. Argyle senior Cassidy Steiner had a kill and Treuthardt came through with a block to give the Orioles a 10-8 lead. The Bulldogs answered scoring six straight points to take a 19-12 lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Treuthardt was disappointed like many of the players to see the season come to an end.
"I will really miss them," Treuthardt said. "We had a great bunch of girls. We had a really good group and we were all really close. I will get to play basketball with them."
