MONROE - Kevin Keen has his team cruising after a brief bump in the road. The Monroe girls basketball team got solid play from its entire lineup in a 56-31 win Saturday over Fort Atkinson.

"We missed a lot of shots and let them run their offense," Keen said. "But we took care of business."

Monroe opened the game on an 11-0 run. It took the Blackhawks 6 minutes, 4 seconds to score, and the Cheesemakers led 14-2 after the first quarter.

Monroe continued to roll in the second, reeling time off the clock and leading 22-8 at hafltime.

"We held them to eight in the first half, but offensively I thought we could have done a better job," Keen said. "We were much better in the second half."

In the second half, the Cheesemakers kept up the pace and closed out their 13th win.

Kyleigh Sellnow finished with a game-high 13 points for Monroe. Ashley Hermanson (12 points) and Jamie Armstrong (11) joined the sophomore in double-digits.

Monroe played every able-bodied player on its roster more than once. Over the final five minutes, the entire bench was emptied, and the reserves got to see plenty of action.

"We've got a couple kids banged up, and hopefully getting some of these kids in the game will help," Keen said. "This was a game to see if kids stepped up and took advantage of some opportunities."

Chelsea Bryce and Morgan Kennison each sat out with injuries.

"They were both hurt in the Mount Horeb game. Morgan will be out for a little while, but Chelsea is day-to-day," Keen said.

Monroe (13-2, 8-1 Badger South) gets back to action Thursday, taking on Waunakee (9-5, 5-3 Badger North) in a series that has gained rivalry status over the past few years.

"Waunakee is a team we've had some battles with the last couple years - and they haven't gone in our favor," Keen said.

After the Waunakee game, the Cheesemakers, ranked No. 4 in Wisconsin's Division 2 by both the Associated Press and the WisSports.net Coaches poll, host the Freeport Pretzels on Saturday, Jan. 7. Freeport is the second-ranked team in Illinois' Class 3A and boasts a 20-2 record.
