SOUTH WAYNE - The communities of South Wayne and Stockton will have the opportunity to unite Monday to celebrate the life of Kelly Kupersmith, a former Black Hawk teacher who died Thursday at the age of 55 after a battle with cancer.

The elementary teachers from Black Hawk School in conjunction with the Black Hawk girls basketball team are hosting a memorium dubbed "Soup for Kup" from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the school. The staff is hosting a celebration of Kupersmith's life that will feature a chicken noodle and potato soup supper, a silent auction, basket raffle and a live auction with signature items from local businesses. Donations will be accepted during the soup supper Monday.

"We really want to celebrate Kelly's life," Black Hawk girls basketball coach Mike Flanagan said. "There were a lot of students in her classroom she touched. She touched so many lives."

The Black Hawk girls will host Stockton in their home opener at 7 p.m. Monday. At halftime of the Warriors' game, the winners of the silent auction, basket raffle and live auction will be announced.

"Her hometown is Stockton," Flanagan said. "It's part of the reason we are doing it on Monday. I think we will have a lot of people from Stockton because of the connection to Kelly."

Kupersmith was a teacher in the Black Hawk school district for 26 years. She served as a long-time elementary teacher and then worked as a special education teacher the past several years.

A penny war at the elementary school level raised $1,500, Flanagan said. Flanagan said the winners of the elementary, middle and high school penny wars will get to throw pies in their teacher's faces after the game Monday.
