CUBA CITY - The Cuba City Cubans may no longer be ranked or be a first-place team team in the SWAL, but they are still one of the state's elite volleyball teams. On Tuesday, the Cubans swept the Darlington Redbirds 25-16, 25-11, 25-16 to keep pace with conference leader, Southwestern.

Grace Stotmeister and Maggie Timmerman each had eight kills to lead Cuba City. The Redbirds were led by junior Miranda Wiegel with five kills, junior Vanessa Riley with eight assists, and junior Elizabeth Mathias with eight blocks. Junior Carly McDonald added two aces and junior Chayse Hermanson had 12 digs for the Redbirds.

Darlington (0-7 SWAL) will host Southwestern Thursday.

Barneveld 3, Monticello 1

BARNEVELD - The Ponies avoided a three game sweep with a game three win, but couldn't hold off the Barneveld Eagles Tuesday, losing in four games 25-12, 25-18, 21-25, 25-20 in a Six Rivers East match.

Senior Taylor Klitzke spiked her way to a team-high nine kills and junior C.J. Dilley contributed 18 assists for the Ponies. Sophomore Amy Silver came up with three blocks for Monticello.

"We started out slow. Then, we had momentum going but they took over in the end," said Monticello head coach Teresa Eliason.

Monticello (2-4 Six Rivers East) will travel to Cassvile Saturday for a non-conference match, then will get back into conference action at Black Hawk Tuesday.

Pecatonica 3, Juda 1

BLANCHARDVILLE - The Vikings got their first conference win Tuesday by defeating Juda, 25-8, 25-27, 25-13, 25-20.

Senior Molly Whitford put down six kills and senior Ellie Gifford delivered 10 assists for Pecatonica.

"It was a good team effort with lots of long volleys. We tried to be more aggressive at the net and it paid off," Pecatonica head coach Cher Schliem said.

On Thursday Pecatonica (1-6 Six Rivers East) hosts Argyle while Juda (2-9) hosts Barneveld.
