PALMYRA - Brodhead-Juda senior Hunter Colden tied the school record for career wins (123) with a forfeit against Palmyra-Eagle Thursday night. As a team, the Cardinals won 60-15 on a night filled with forfeits.

Of their 10 match wins, the Cardinals won 9 of them by forfeit. In the other, junior Tyler Davis, wrestling at 195 pounds, pinned Eugene Sweno 1:07 into the second period.

"(Tyler) wrestled real well," Brodhead-Juda coach Tim Colden said. "He wrestled that kid last year, and I think he won 6-5. He showed big improvement."

At 132 pounds, freshman Dylan Kubly made his varsity debut. He lost to Palmyra-Eagle's Josh Otto by a 5-4 decision, but Tim Colden said he saw some good work amid the first-match jitters.

"He wrestled well," Tim Colden said. "He had a couple opportunities. You could tell he was a little nervous, but he'll be alright."

With all the forfeits, only five wrestlers got to hit the mat, but the anxious Cardinals (1-0) will get to compete in a five-dual tournament in Cambridge on Saturday.

"We had a lot of kids who were anxious to wrestle tonight, and some of our better wrestlers weren't able to," Tim Colden said. "They'll get their matches on Saturday."

Among those looking to get back into action is Hunter Colden. With his next win, he will break Tyler Lincoln's school record of 123 career victories. He should see plenty of opportunities in Cambridge.

"Hopefully he'll get five matches on Saturday," Tim Colden said.

Black Hawk 42, Darlington 33

DARLINGTON - Black Hawk's wrestlers traveled to Darlington Tuesday night to take on the Redbirds in what was the first meet of the year for both teams.

Black Hawk picked up seven wins, three by forfeit, on their way to a 42-33 team victory.

Colin Novak (120), Jared Pickett (126), Beau Holland (132), and Stephen Detra (152) all recorded pins for the Warriors.

Darlington had six wins, three by forfeit. Sophomore Casey Lobdell (160) beat Black Hawk's Logan Stietz by an 11-9 decision. At 285, Hayden Black pinned Mike Powers in 4:56. Senior Alex Schulte also picked up a pin for the Redbirds at 170, defeating Taime Paul in 1:09.

"Schulte came out and got a quick pin for us," Darlington coach Tom Mathias said.

Mathias credited Black Hawk for coming out and wrestling tough from the start, and said that his team has a lot of room for improvement.

"The Black Hawk kids came out and wrestled tough," he said. "They proved they were the better team tonight. We're a very young team, and it showed tonight. We've got a lot to work on."

Sugar River 48, Columbus 30

BELLEVILLE - The Sugar River wrestling team collected eight match wins en route to a 48-30 victory over Columbus Thursday night.

Of their eight match wins, six came by forfeit. Sophomore Kody Popenfus, wrestling at 120 pounds, pinned Columbus' Gattlyn Molnar 55 seconds into the second period. Senior Evan Dorn (132), won by pin over freshman Jesse Virgin 1:20 into the second period.

Columbus otherwise wrestled strong in the weight classes they could compete in, collecting three pins, a tech fall and a major decision.

"Head-to-head, they beat us," Sugar River coach Peter Swenson said.

Swenson noted that there were a number of opportunities missed by his wrestlers and others taking shots and getting out of position.

"Those are things we can look at and build upon and look to get better," he said.

It's early in the season yet, and Swenson says effort is not the problem, but rather the execution.

"The effort's there, and the kids are really trying," he said. "It's putting the things in practice out on the mat. It's early yet, but you gotta keep reminding everybody ... 'the effort's there, but you gotta be thinking during the match.'"

One of the things Swenson hopes to see is more capitalizing on the opportunities when they arise, wherever his wrestlers may be on the mat.

"We gotta get control working off the bottom, because the opportunities are there."

Evansville-Albany 60, Edgerton 11

EVANSVILLE - The Evansville-Albany wrestling team opened the season with a dominating win over Edgerton.

The other pins by the Blue Devils included heavyweight Michael Henrich, Brandon Robinson (120), Jordan Meyer (132), Nick Lehman (145), Dalton Walters (160), Tyler Grant (170) and Ben Reed (195).

Evansville-Albany's Nathan Vickery (126) defeated Edgerton's Robert Reynolds 9-4. Teammate Alex Lange (138) defeated Edgerton's Jared Heil 13-8. Evansville-Albany's Jake Carpenter (152) defeated Kyle Bavery 9-5, and Cody Meyer (220) defeated Edgerton's Spencer Stone 7-0.
