BRODHEAD - Sophomore Jake Pickel's timing couldn't have been better.
Pickel tapped a missed shot back to Brodhead senior Griffin Day hit a 3-pointer just inside the halfcourt line to tie the game against Argyle to force overtime Saturday, Feb. 8. The Cardinals outscored the Orioles 12-6 in overtime to pull out a thrilling 59-53 win. Day scored a game-high 20 points, but none were more clutch than the 3-pointer at the end of the fourth quarter to beat the buzzer.
"When Griffin hit that shot, it gave him confidence and gave the team more pop," Brodhead coach Brian Kammerer said.
With the win, Brodhead (3-15, 1-11 Rock Valley South) snapped a nine-game losing streak. It marks the Cardinals' first win since Dec. 28.
"It's a load off the kids' shoulders to feel what it's like to win again," Kammerer said. "The saving grace has been our kids work hard. I have preached to them if they work hard the wins will come."
Argyle (5-11, 2-6 Six Rivers East) led by seven points most of the fourth quarter. The Cardinals switched to a fullcourt press and trapped on the first pass in the fourth and were able to convert on some turnovers by the Orioles.
"We wanted to force the tempo," Kammerer said. "We just had to force the issue to see if we could get some steals. They had some costly turnovers down the stretch and we were able to take advantage of it."
Brodhead sophomore Ned Slocum scored 17 points and junior Tjaden Sanders added 16 points.
Argyle sophomore Riley Ostby scored a team-high 16 points and Kyle Emberson added 15 points. Senior teammate Alec Treuthardt chipped in 10 points.
Brodhead plays three games this week. The Cardinals will host McFarland tonight and are at Beloit Turner Tuesday, Feb. 11. The Cardinals then host Parkview Friday, Feb. 14.
