BRODHEAD - The Brodhead girls basketball team has so many offensive weapons that sometimes junior sharpshooter Meg Duffield can catch teams by surprise.

Duffield scored a game-high 14 points and drilled three 3-pointers to power the Cardinals to a 57-40 win over Edgerton Friday night.

"Anyone on our team can shoot," Duffield said. "We just have to get hot. We have a deep team. We are all ready to play when our time comes."

Brodhead coach Brad Pickett isn't surprised by Duffield's shooting success.

"We tell her if she is open to shoot it," Pickett said. "She is a great shooter. She is capable of doing that (hitting 3-pointers). That opens up our drives. If Meg can keep doing that we will be a pretty tough team to stop."

Duffield had plenty of support in a balanced scoring attack. Brodhead senior Taylor Douglas scored 13 points and junior Carly Mohns had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Rachel Heller chipped in eight points. Mohns and Douglas have battled back from ACL injuries.

"You don't necessarily want to play 10 or 11 girls every night," Pickett said. "We do have the kids so we can play 10 or 11. We want to give the girls a chance to prove themselves. I feel we can wear teams down with our depth. We have a lot of kids who can play multiple positions. We just have to keep taking advantage of that."

Brodhead (5-0 Rock Valley South) had a big advantage early on grabbing 10 offensive rebounds in the first half. The Cardinals used a fullcourt press to spark an 11-3 first quarter run. Duffield knocked down a 3-pointer and Douglas scored on a layup to give the Cardinals an eight point lead about midway through the first quarter.

"I think our team did a good job of getting to the offensive boards and glass," Mohns said.

Mohns said she is just going out to play and not worrying about the ACL injury she has overcome.

Edgerton senior Whitney Oren and junior Julia Snell each hit 3-pointers in the second quarter to slice the Cardinals' lead to 20-17 with 6:20 left in the frame.

The Cardinals answered with a 14-4 run to close the second quarter. Mohns scored down low and Douglas and later Heller scored on putbacks with 4:17 to go in the period to give the Cardinals an insurmountable 12-point lead. Brodhead freshman Amber Pickel scored on a putback right before halftime to give the Cardinals a 34-21 lead.

Edgerton (1-5) had an 8-2 spurt to start the third quarter keyed by Snell and Kassie Walters hitting 3-pointers to cut the Cardinals' lead to 36-29. The Cardinals answered with Duffield and then Douglas knocking down 3-pointers to extend the lead to 46-32 at the end of the third quarter.

"We were not going to take them easily," Duffield said of Edgerton. "They are a good team. They have lost some close games. We wanted to come out ready to play in the third quarter and finish it."

The Cardinals led by as many as 19 points in the second half. The Crimson Tide switched to a zone and forced the Cardinals into 10 turnovers in the second half.

"We just had to stop turning it over," Duffield said. "We got a hand in their face to stop the 3-pointer from going in. We played as a team and never gave up."

Brodhead now turns its attention to an undefeated showdown at East Troy Dec. 20. East Troy defeated the Cardinals twice last year including a 58-37 loss in the sectional semifinal last year.

"We always talk to beat the best, you have to play the best," Pickett said. "East Troy is one of the best right now. It will be a good matchup. That only makes us a better team. We will have to play very well to beat them."
