BRODHEAD - Senior guard Ned Slocum scored on a layup with 4 seconds to go and was fouled. He sank the free throw to give the Brodhead High School boys basketball team a thrilling 52-51 nonconference win over Monroe Monday night.

Brodhead (2-0) ran a sideline out-of-bounds play for Slocum, and he came through with a clutch layup and free throw in the waning seconds.

"Obviously, Monroe is a very good team," Brodhead coach Nick Jarvis said. "It was a battle. It was nice to see a kid step up when he was called on. Our kids were very excited. They know how good Monroe is. You can't take anything away from Monroe. They played really hard. We just got a couple of breaks."

Brodhead junior Tyler Flannery scored 16 points to lead the Cardinals to the win. The win over the Cheesemakers came on the heels of Brodhead's 60-45 season-opening win over Albany on Saturday.

The Cardinals made six 3-pointers to edge the Cheesemakers in a tight battle. The biggest lead for the Cheesemakers in the second half was three points.

Brodhead sophomore Brekan Day scored 12 points.

The Cheesemakers limited Slocum to nine points, but he had two baskets late.

Brodhead sophomore Parker Johnson chipped in eight points and hit two 3-pointers.

"They (Monroe) limited Ned a lot of the game," Jarvis said. "They took a couple of charges. Ned is not worried about his stat line. He got into foul trouble, but he came back."

Monroe's David Keegan scored a team-high 15 points and junior Alex Tordoff added 12 points. Junior Carter Sawdey chipped in 11 points.

Monroe (0-2) hosts Madison Edgewood at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
