EVANSVILLE - Brodhead got a jumper from J.J. Panoske to send Tuesday's Highway 104 boys basketball rivalry into overtime, then completed the 48-47 win over Evansville with a pair of free throws by Steven Priske.

The Cardinals took a 7-6 lead after the first quarter and led 18-13 at halftime. In the second half, the Blue Devils (7-3, 5-1) outscored Brodhead 18-10 to take a three-point lead.

As the final period of regulation played out, it was Brodhead that had the last chance.

"We drew up a play for J.J. and he hit a short jumper with seven seconds left and our defense kept Evansville from scoring," Brodhead coach Brian Kammerer said.

In the overtime, Micah Wallace hit a late 3-pointer to bring Brodhead back from its deficit. Then Priske, the part-time guard, stepped in and hit a pair of free throws to win the game.

"We had good defense all game. And this was a big game. Evansville was undefeated in the (Rock Valley) North," Kammerer said.

Ryan Miller continued to have the hot hand, finishing with a game-high 18 points. Panoske and Jacob Cole each scored 10 points for the Cardinals (7-4, 4-3 RVC South).

Cole fouled out with about two minutes left in the overtime and Kammerer chose to put in Priske because of his defensive play. However, losing a player like Cole made everyone hold their breath.

"Cole did a really good job again of running our offense. When he fouled out, we were all a little worried because we were behind and time was winding down. But our guys came through," Kammerer said.

Brodhead hosts Palmyra-Eagle (2-8, 0-6) in the second game of a girls-boys doubleheader Friday night.
