BRODHEAD - The No. 2 ranked Brodhead girls basketball team was clicking on all cylinders rolling to a 57-41 win over Madison La Follette in a non-conference game Monday, Jan. 13.

Brodhead senior Carly Mohns, a University of Iowa recruit, scored a game-high 22 points and had 12 rebounds. Fellow senior Meg Duffield scored 20 points and made four 3-pointers.

Brodhead coach Brad Pickett said beating a Division 1 team like Madison La Follette will absolutely help come seeding time for the tournament.

"For us as a Division 3 school to get a chance against a Division 1 team, there were some things we wanted to see," Pickett said. "For the most part, we responded."

Brodhead (10-0, 5-0 Rock Valley South) opened the game with a 14-0 surge in the first quarter. The Cardinals led by 18 at the half.

"When you get a chance to play a team the quality of that opponent you have to take advantage of it," Pickett said. "We talked in the locker room during the pre-game that we have to come out and set the tone."

In addition to hitting four 3-pointers, Duffield made 6 of 9 free throws and the Cardinals were 17 of 26 from the foul line. Brodhead senior Rachel Heller scored eight points.

"Meg has had the green light with us since her freshman year," Pickett said. "When you have a shooter you don't tell her not to shoot. We have to shoot it well to open up more room for our offense."

Black Hawk 50,

Parkview 35

SOUTH WAYNE - Black Hawk senior Jen Wellnitz became the school's all-time leading scorer and the Warriors rolled to a 50-35 win over Parkview Monday.

Wellnitz scored a game-high 22 points, grabbed nine rebounds, had nine steals and seven assists. She eclipsed the previous career scoring record of Kim Wellnitz (1,240) by three points (1,243) and she still has more than half the season remaining.

"She wanted to get it at home," Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan said. "To do it in front of her fans means a lot. I think she and I are both glad it's over with. It's one more thing she can put behind her."

Black Hawk (8-2, 5-0 Six Rivers East) trailed 20-19 at the half. Parkview played a 1-3-1 zone. The Warriors came back and outscored the Vikings 31-15 in the second half.

"In the first half I think we had good spacing," Flanagan said. "We were just not finishing on putbacks. We had a lot of unfinished opportunities. In the second half, we got a few of those to go."

Black Hawk sophomore Aleigha Sigafus scored 10 of her 14 points in the second half. She had 13 rebounds with 10 coming on the offensive end.

"We hit the glass hard," Flanagan said. "That was just huge."

Black Hawk will play at Barneveld Saturday with first place in the conference at stake.

"We haven't shied away about talking about how good they are," Flanagan said. "You never know what can happen when you lace them up. They have a lot of 16, 17 and 18-year olds like we have. They are human. It will be a measuring stick. We respect them. We will see how big the gap is if there is a gap. This team hasn't panicked in the face of adversity."

Monticello 40, Cassville 17

MONTICELLO - The Ponies used a pressure defense and a timely halfcourt press to run away 40-17 win over Cassville Monday.

Monticello (6-4, 1-3 Six Rivers East) jumped out to an 11-2 lead and didn't look back. The Ponies led by 18 points at the half and didn't give up a field goal in the second quarter. The Comets went more than 8 minutes without a basket and the Ponies outscored them 19-14 in the second half.

Monticello junior Samantha DeVoe scored a team-high 10 points. Senior Marissa Berg and junior Alyssah Kubly each scored seven points. Juniors Mackenzie Zanow and Courtney Leuzinger each chipped in six points.

"We put on the pressure because we wanted to force some turnovers," Monticello coach Lori Brokopp said. "We rattled them a little bit."

Cassville used a 2-3 zone throughout the game.

"We were patient," Brokopp said. "I wanted to make sure we were not forcing shots. We had a lead so we could be a little picky with our shot selection. We went to a halfcourt press and our defense really stepped up."
