BRODHEAD - The Brodhead girls basketball team's sensational season ended earlier than hoped Thursday with a 48-43 overtime loss to Rock Valley North rival McFarland.
"It doesn't matter who you are, you wantt o be playing on Saturday," Brodhead head coach Chris Medenwaldt said after the Division 2 regional semifinal loss.
Brodhead trailed 12-9 after the first quarter by took a 19-17 lead by halftime. The Cardinals held the Spartans to just two points in the third, but McFarland rallied in the fourth to send the game into overtime.
Dana Lewis had an open shot at the basket as time expired, but the shot couldn't go.
In the overtime, McFarland (17-5) converted 13 of 15 free throws.
Junior Dana Lewis scores 17 points in the game and senior Kristen Ruchti scored 10 for Brodhead (18-4).
The Cardinals will graduate six players from their lineup - many of whom were on the volleyball team that went to the state tournament last November.
