The Brodhead-Juda football team overcame some costly turnovers to knock off Lakeside Lutheran 28-21 in a WIAA Division 4 state quarterfinal on Saturday.
With the win, Brodhead-Juda (10-2) will advance to the state semifinals next week and will play Wrightstown. There will be a new state champion in Division 4 after Wrightstown beat defending champion Kewaunee 36-12.
Brodhead-Juda senior quarterback David Earleywine tossed a 41-yard TD pass to Levi Frost to give the Cardinals a 21-14 lead late in the third quarter.
It was a wild fourth quarter. When it looked like the Cardinals would extend the lead midway through the fourth quarter, disaster struck. Brodhead-Juda senior Jesse DeLorme lost his second fumble of the game and the Warriors recovered at their own 2-yard line. Brodhead-Juda senior Trenton Jordan intercepted a pass and returned it 33-yards to the Warriors' 7-yard line. Two plays later, DeLorme plunged in for a 1-yard TD to give the Cardinals a 28-14 lead with 4 minutes, 25 seconds left.
Lakeside Lutheran's Caleb Gartner caught a 31-yard TD pass with 3:15 to go to cut the Cardinals' lead to 28-21. The Warriors tried an onside kick, but the Cardinals recovered and were able to run out the clock.
