BRODHEAD - The secret weapon for the Brodhead boys basketball team in beating Albany's box-in-one defense proved to be senior Carson Scheidegger's outside shot.
Scheidegger and senior J.J. Panokse combined to score 34 points and the Cardinals rolled to a 58-27 non-conference win over the Comets Monday night. Scheidegger had the hot hand early, scoring eight of his 13 points in the first quarter. Albany (2-7, 1-1 Six Rivers East) played a box-in-one defense that featured a four man zone and man-to-man on Panoske.
"We knew that they would probably play that box-in-one," Panoske said. "When he (Scheidegger) hit those big shots it took them out of the box-in-one."
The Cardinals (5-4, 3-2 Rock Valley South) went on a 17-0 spurt from the end of the first quarter into the second. The surge was highlighted by steals and layups by Scheidegger and senior Alex Wallace. Panoske, a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee recruit who scored a game-high 21 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had five blocked shots, started heating up. He shot 7-for-8 from the field.
Brodhead coach Brian Kammerer said the team talked about having someone step up shooting from the outside.
"I think Carson definitely stepped up shooting for us," Kammerer said. "I think he is confident when he shoots the ball and thinks that it is going to go in."
Albany started out hot with senior Boomer Detra and freshman Isaiah Shell knocking down jumpers on back-to-back possessions midway through the first quarter to give the Comets an 8-6 lead.
"We wanted to keep the ball out of J.J's hands," Albany coach Derik Doescher said. "We wanted them to shoot it from the outside. That was our game plan. He's a good passer. People tend to forget that."
It soon unraveled from there. The Comets went through a 9-minute scoring drought from the first quarter into the second that coincided with the Cardinals' run.
"In that run they got out of the box-in-one and I was able to hit some shots," Panoske said. "Our defense stepped up. I think we started jumping in the passing lanes and our defense was the biggest factor for sure."
Detra scored a team-high 13 points to lead the Comets. Turnovers plagued the Comets.
"There were too many possessions where we didn't get a shot off," Doescher said. "We had too many turnovers."
