Cardinals cruise past Deerfield

BRODHEAD - Junior Abbey Johnson posted 18 assists, three aces and 14 digs to lead the Cardinals to a sweep over Deerfield in a WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal match.

Brodhead senior Chandra Clark added a team-best 12 kills and had eight assists to help the Cardinals roll to a 25-18, 25-8, 25-13 win over Deerfield.

"We came out and served well," Brodhead coach Erin Kammerer said. "I think we tried to keep our offense fast so we had the advantage."

With the win, Brodhead (22-16) will host Darlington in a regional quarterfinal match Thursday.

"I know Darlington has a really good middle hitter (Kennedy Rankin) we need to shut down," Kammerer said. "She's their go-to player. I think we need to come out and run a fast tempo and try to get them out of system."

Brodhead sophomore Katie Goecks delivered seven kills and two blocks. Senior Erin Nyhus notched five aces and Alexis Oliver had five digs.



Darlington 3, Parkview 0

DARLINGTON - Jen Schwartz challenged her Darlington volleyball team Tuesday and they answered the bell.

Darlington senior Kennedy Rankin had a team-high seven kills, seven aces and five blocks to lead the Redbirds to a 25-16, 25-15, 25-12 win over the Vikings. With the win, Darlington improves to 15-6.

"I told them to leave it all out on the floor," Schwartz said of Darlington before the regional match. "They responded and played well tonight."

Darlington junior Roxi Rueter had 14 assists and junior Kathleen Mathias had six digs.

"We served and passed really well," Schwartz said. "We were able to get the ball to our big hitters and they were able to put it away."

Now, the Redbirds will prepare to play Brodhead in a regional semifinal match.

"From the little bit of scouting I've been able to do, I think we are evenly matched," Schwartz said.



Cuba City 3,

New Glarus 0

CUBA CITY - Top-seeded Cuba City rolled to a sweep over New Glarus in a WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal match Tuesday.

New Glarus senior Riley Parker had a team-high six assists and one ace, but the Cubans knocked off the Glarner Knights 25-12, 25-12, 25-11.

New Glarus senior Willow Lee posted four kills and senior Julia Barnaby had two blocks. Senior teammate Cailyn Weiser dished out five assists.



Black Hawk 3,

Faith Christian 0

SOUTH WAYNE - Black Hawk freshman Bailey Butler had 11 kills to lead the Warriors to a sweep of Faith Christian in a WIAA Division 4 regional quarterfinal Tuesday.

Fourth-seeded Black Hawk cruised to a 25-11, 25-6, 25-16 win over Faith Christian. With the win, Black Hawk advances to a regional semifinal where the Warriors will host fifth-seeded Barneveld Thursday.

Black Hawk senior Hannah Herbst dished out 13 assists and sophomore Hannah Butler added nine assists. Junior Savanna Burmeister notched four aces.



Catholic Central 3, Albany 0

BURLINGTON - Second-seeded Catholic Central raced by Albany in three sets in a Division 4 regional quarterfinal match 25-3, 25-13, 25-10.



Barneveld 3, Pecatonica 0

BARNEVELD - Fifth-seeded Barneveld swept 12th-seeded Pecatonica in three sets 25-16, 25-20, 27-25.
