Cardinal boys run to title

BRODHEAD - The members of the Brodhead-Juda boys cross country team packed together and turned in a dominating season-opening performance to win the Brodhead Invitational Thursday.

The Cardinals had seven of the top 10 runners and scored 25 points. Evansville was a distant second with 60. Edgerton (68) placed third and Beloit Turner was last (85) in the four-team meet.

Brodhead-Juda junior Nate Ciabatti finished third in the 5,000-meter race in a time of 19 minutes, 1 second. Edgerton's Chris Nix was the individual champion (17:41).

Brodhead-Juda junior Reuben Larson placed fourth (19:34), junior Tyler Urness fifth (19:45), junior Blake Burns sixth (19:47) and senior Peter Speckman seventh (19:55).

Although just the top five count in the scoring, the Cardinals got a couple of other strong races from freshman Holden Whitledge, who finished ninth (20:02), and sophomore Alex Aguilar, who placed 10th (20:20).

Brodhead-Juda placed second out of five girls teams at the invitational. Madison Edgewood, the defending Badger South Conference champion, outdistanced the Cardinals for the title 33-49. Brodhead-Juda senior Taylor Bluemel won the race in 19:35. The Crusaders had four of the top eight runners led by Maddie McClimon, who took second (21:11).

Brodhead-Juda sophomore Cora Purdue finished fourth (21:19) and sophomore Madee Harding seventh (22:19). Senior teammate Danielle Dieckhoff placed 15th (23:45), and Morgan Tressmer was 22nd (25:36).
