CAMBRIDGE - The New Glarus girls basketball team will need some help to win at least a share of the Capitol South Conference after losing to Cambridge for the second time in a week.
With the Blue Jays clinging to a two-point lead, Cambridge's Becca Ciampa hit free throws with 20 seconds left to seal a 53-48 win over the Glarner Knights. New Glarus junior Anya Schween scored a team-high 14 points to lead the Knights and Courtney Feller added 12 points.
Cambridge (10-9, 6-2 Capitol South) jumped out to a 19-7 first-quarter lead and led 33-19 at halftime. The Knights (9-8, 5-3) along with Marshall and Wisconsin Heights, are in a three-way tie for second place and just a game back of the Blue Jays with two conference games left. New Glarus hosts Marshall on Friday, while Cambridge will play at Marshall on Feb. 23.
Black Hawk 48, Pecatonica 14
SOUTH WAYNE - Black Hawk received contributions from several players and rolled past Pecatonica.
Black Hawk sophomore Mikayla Sigafus scored a game-high nine points to lead the Warriors. Black Hawk seniors Kate Quinn and Katie Powers each added eight points.
"We got a lot of kids in early," Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan said. "For us to have the opportunity to have some kids who sometimes don't see the floor a ton get substantial minutes and play hard, those are the games as a coach you really enjoy."
Black Hawk (16-1, 8-0 Six Rivers East) jumped out to a 15-3 lead and led 29-5 at halftime. With the loss, Pecatonica drops to (3-16, 1-8).
"They couldn't get anything going and we played good defense," Flanagan said.
Pecatonica senior Kacey Schoepp scored a team-high five points.
Monticello 46, Albany 36
MONTICELLO - The Ponies overcame some free throw shooting struggles to knock off the Comets.
Monticello (10-8, 6-4 Six Rivers East) made just 5 of 17 free throws, but were able to pull out the win. Monticello senior Becky Nelson scored a team-high 13 points and freshman Alyssah Kubly added 10 points. Monticello senior Katie Gierhart chipped in nine points.
Albany (4-14, 0-9) was led by junior Kirstie Kauk, who scored a game-high 15 points, and junior Cassidy Bump, who had 10 points.
