ALBANY - Albany sophomore Sydney Bump proved that if opponents don't put a body on her to box her out, she creates havoc and makes them pay.

Bump scored 12 of her 19 points in the first half and she added seven rebounds (four offensive) to lead the Comets to a 42-34 non-conference girls basketball win Saturday over Faith Christian.

During a key stretch in the fourth quarter, Bump put back senior Nicolette Blumer's miss at 6 minutes, 43 seconds to give the Comets a 38-31 lead. On the next possession, Blumer's layup pushed the Comets' lead to 40-31.

"I'm confident because Sydney makes things happen," Albany coach Mike Brunhoefer said. "When you have an athlete like her, she can get to the basket."

Early on, the game had the makings of a game that would go to the wire. The Comets closed the first quarter with a 7-0 spurt, all the points coming from Blumer, to take a 13-8 lead. Blumer made a layup on the fastbreak and buried a 3-pointer from the wing to spark the Comets.

Albany (4-4, 1-2 Six Rivers East) used a halfcourt trap in the second quarter, frustrating the Eagles and breaking the game open with a 10-2 run. Bump put back her own miss and she scored in the post on the next possession to give the Comets a 23-10 lead.

Behind Bump, the Comets built a 25-15 halftime lead.

"We are used to coming in the locker room down," Bump said of the first half. "We had a good finish today. It was good to come in and get a win."

Midway through the third quarter, sophomore Hayli Peach hit a driving basket and was fouled. She converted the conventional three-point play at the free throw line to give the Comets a 32-19 lead.

The Eagles closed the third quarter on a 10-2 run to cut the Comets' lead to 34-29.

"We couldn't stop that back cut," Brunhoefer said. "I think in the fourth quarter, the girls got the concept of letting them shoot from the outside. We finally woke up in time to salvage a win."

The Comets have added a zone defense and a halfcourt trap to their arsenal.

"We have been working on defense and trying some new twists," Bump said.

She said the Comets just want to mix it up each time down the floor.

Blumer added 11 points and had five rebounds for the Comets.

"We are learning to win as a team," Brunhoefer said.
